When Giuseppe Verdi's Aida premiered in 1871, the composer was a revered figure who had already contributed nearly two dozen works to the operatic canon. Massive in scope, this 4-act masterpiece has long held its place in the repertoire, having been performed all over the world and sung over 1,100 times at the Metropolitan Opera alone. During this program, Dr. Gil Harel will discuss the circumstances that led to Verdi composing an opera on such an exotic subject. We will also consider why the opera succeeded so profoundly and immediately, and how Verdi's gift for setting musical dramas is in evidence throughout. More
